Why Utah?

Utah is where Law on Call launched and we’ve been practicing law there since 2021. And yet—why Utah? In short, because the state is open to innovation.

Utah is helping lead the charge on legal industry reform, testing new ideas as they work to make legal help easier to find and cheaper to secure. In 2020, they launched the Legal Regulatory Sandbox, which makes it possible for nonlawyer-owned law firms like ours to operate.

In addition to Utah, we offer Arizona legal services.

How does the Utah Legal Sandbox work?

The Utah legal regulatory Sandbox is overseen by the Utah Supreme Court’s Office of Legal Services Innovation. To participate, businesses must submit applications and be analyzed for potential consumer risk.

The Sandbox allows:

  • Law firms owned by nonlawyers (like ours!).
  • Fee-sharing between lawyers and nonlawyers.
  • Certain nonlawyer practitioners providing legal advice and services.

Why are legal industry reforms in Utah necessary?

Because past initiatives did not solve Utah’s access to justice problem. Increasingly, Utahns have been unable to procure legal help, finding themselves outside the legal industry’s best practices and recommendations.

How does Law on Call fit into Utah?

Utah’s where it all began.

We were one of the first businesses authorized to open a law firm as part of the Sandbox, and we’ll keep operating in Utah for as long as the Supreme Court allows.
